Global mega-trends are driving rapid change in the world of work as highlighted by International, National and Regional policymakers. These trends include a substantially increased pace of technological change and adaptation by industry and society. One such technology is Additive Manufacturing; frequently referred to as 3D Printing.

The new BSc in Additive Manufacturing degree is designed to allow people currently working in an additive manufacturing to upskill in the advanced additive manufacturing applications across a multiple industry sectors including Med-Tech, Bio-Pharma, Aerospace, Agri-Tech and Precision Engineering.

The degree has been developed by the SETU Waterford led AMASE | Additive Manufacturing Advancing the South-East funded under the Irish Government’s Human Capital Initiative and in partnership with SETU Carlow and our industry partners.

Along with the BSc in Additive Manufacturing (60 credits at level 7) the AMASE team have also developed an integrated suite of shorter 10-credit awards: 

  • Certificate in Introduction to Additive Manufacturing – 10 credits 
  • Certificate in Design for Additive Manufacturing – 10 credits 
  • Certificate in Additive Manufacturing Health & Safety and Regulatory Affairs – 10 credits 
  • Certificate in Additive Manufacturing Lab Technologies & Post Processing – 10 credits 

Delivery & Assessment

Synchronously online
On-site lecturers and workshops.

The course will be delivered over two 12-week semester, commencing in September 2024.

It will be delivered in a blended mode:

Classes will be on:

  • Fridays 9:00am – 5:00 pm [ these full days will include both fully online and fully on-site days ]

The assessment will be 100% Continuous Assessment – including written assignments and reports, presentations and group projects. No examinations.

Fees

The cost of the course is €3,000. However the Human Capital Initiative is is providing €2,250 funding for each place.

Therefore each student will be charged fees of just €750 to do the full 60-credit degree.

Applications

Please note that applications can only be considered when complete - i.e. you will need to upload these docs in order to be in the competition for a funded place:

  • an up-to-date CV;
  • explanation of what you hope to get from this course in terms of your current skills and job role and how it might benefit your career or your company (max 300 words)
  • academic certificate(s) or transcripts which evidence that you meet the academic entry requirements.

Entry

To enter the Level 7 Bachelor of Science (major award) and Level 7 Certificate (minor award) programmes learners must have the following:

  • A Level 6 Higher Certificate in an engineering or relevant technical discipline (or equivalent).
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Electrical/ Electronic Engineering
    • Automation Engineering

Do I need to already have a specific level of CAD expertise?

There is no CAD design entry level required. This programme is not intending to complete CAD design capabilities but to review in detail the specific software packages used in Additive Manufacturing and introduce the new level of design freedom available.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants who do not currently meet the academic entry requirements but who may have a substantial recorded of relevant learning (gained through work experience for example) equivalent to the entry requirements may make their case for admission using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. The learning claims of each candidate would then be assessed for admission to the programme on a case by case basis by the programme team in line with institute policy. English Language Competency

Eligible applicants must at least meet the minimum English language competency requirements for the University.

Indeed, the rapidly developing and transformative nature of Additive Manufacturing is internationally evidenced as crucial to the future production of physical products across all business sectors particularly in the high value Med-Tech, Bio-Pharma, Aerospace, Agri-Tech and Precision Engineering sectors. These sectors are served by a multiplicity of local and national companies providing highly valuable ‘downstream’ employment within the region.
It is in this context that engineering employers in the South-East and indeed the wider Southern Region have all identified as the priority the need for education, training and upskilling of existing employees at NFQ Level 7 to become Additive Manufacturing Production Specialists.

Graduates from the major award will hold the award of Level 7 Bachelor of Science and can apply to enter a Level 8-degree programme in accordance with the specific entry criteria of the programme and institute. Graduates will generally enter at Stage 4 (or directly into a stand-alone Level 8 60 credit programme). Depending on the specific Level 8 programme applied for, it may be necessary to complete certain bridging modules as part of the programme.
